Palate Profile

Dow's Forty Years Old Tawny is made exclusively from grapes sourced at "A" classified vineyards (the highest), which include Dow's Quinta do Bomfim and Quintada Senhora da Ribeira, two of the very best vineyards in the Douro valley. This enviable position is reflected in the excellent quality and consistency of the style evident in Dow's 40-Year-Old Tawny.

This Forty Year Old Port is a wine of great rarity and quality. Forty years of careful ageing in oak casks have brought this wine to perfect balance. This wine represents the pinnacle of the Port blender's art. Fine amber and tawnyc olour. Complex aromas of nuts, raisins and vanilla explode from the glass. On the palate hot, with predominantly flavours of dried fruits and walnuts, with good acidity and an exquisite long finish.

Critic Awards

This very sweet and very old tawny Port shows fabulous density and richness, not to mention intense sweetness and depth. A little tannic yet remains polished and caressing. Long and flavorful finish of dried fruits, citrus, caramel and butterscotch as well as salted nuts. Some Portuguese flan.

Intense, featuring date, fig and walnut notes that drive through with authority, pulling flashes of green tea, singed alder and dried ginger in along the way. Adds brightness and energy on the finish, with a hazelnut note filling in. Drink now.

While this continues to some extent the "dry, stern and powerful" feel of its siblings, this also has the most richness, the sweetest edge and the most ability to cut that stern aspect. The finish is long and delicious, laced with caramel and milk chocolate.

Produced from the two vineyards that also supply Dow's Vintage Ports, this is a surprisingly light, fresh wine considering its age. It is bright-eyed with acidity and perfumed toffee and raisin flavors, a wine that can be drunk now.
