Palate Profile

In 2004, an unlikely kinship shared with an elderly German gentleman resulted in the Hentley Farm estate being extended with the purchase of a neighbouring vineyard, which shared the treasured natural amphitheatre of rolling hills that surround Hentley Farm and has resulted in their icon, the Clos Otto Shiraz.

Opulence, complexity and balance all come to mind when thinking about the Clos Otto Shiraz... With vines planted by previous owner Otto Kasper using a cutting from an ageing and secret Shiraz clone, and tended to with almost antique machinery and a well-practiced hand, the Clos Otto vineyard consistently yields super low quantities with ultra-rich flavours.

The current 2020 release is a story of both vineyard and vintage showcasing a perfect mix of power and elegance with vibrant colours and powerful fruit. The fruit for the 2020 Shiraz Clos Otto is picked from 25- to 30-year-old vines, basket pressed and matured for 22 months in 65% new French oak barrels.

Critic Awards

Dark with a trace of purple; blackberry jam and licorice aromas, sweetly ripe, with side-notes of nutmeg and bayleaf, the palate medium-full bodied, tannins full but supple and balanced. Very full and plush across the palate. A very good wine—value is another matter! It's fleshy and concentrated, the tannins providing a sheen across the tongue and the entire wine oozes polish and distinction.

This is a rich and concentrated Clos Otto with aromas of ripe red and dark plums, sarsaparilla and blueberries, as well as chocolate, spiced biscuit and violets. There’s a glimmer of whole bunches, too. The palate holds such a pure, luscious and enveloping line and has deeply intense, fine tannins that carry freshness, as well as richness. The balance is good here. Quite detailed and complex.

This is dense, plush, velvety and concentrated and has a padded-room kind of vibe; the tannins cushion the impact of pillowy fruit and soft acid in the mouth, providing a comfort and saturating drinking experience. The tannins close around the finish, telling us it does need a little extra time to come together, the fruit power an indication of the potential life ahead of it.
