Palate Profile

Rated 95/100 By Ned Goodwin for James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

Matured in French oak hogsheads for 18 months. Pitch black in colour with a deep dark red black hue. Potently scented the nose is flooded with ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry scents which flow into hints of black olive, fennel, vanillin cedar and blackpepper. Incredibly rich, intense and deep, black cherry, blackberry and liquorice fruits explode across the palate. Lying underneath are elements of smoky vanillin cedar, fennel, traces of black olive and pepper. Opulent yet muscular in its feel with robust tannins providing the framework. Outstanding power finishing very long, rich and structured.

Critic Awards

This is a salubrious, full-bodied and glossy wine. A deep crimson verging on opaque. A firm bulwark of coffee grind-mocha tannins prolongs scents of violet, blue to black berry persuasions and crushed rock, long and far across the palate. The tannins define, etch and shape this, keeping it from an OTT persuasion. Just. Very good, if hedonism is your cup of tea.

Even better than the impressive 2016, Kilikanoon's 2017 Covenant Shiraz offers up aromas of violets, blackberries and blueberries. It's full-bodied yet vibrant, a bit Cornas-like (but without the granitic base), with fine, silky tannins and a lingering finish. It can be consumed with pleasure anytime over the next decade or so.

This cool-climate Shiraz is meaty, with an umami savoriness that backs plump dark fruit and plums. Fleshy, fresh fruit on the palate is underpinned by roasting herbs and spices that linger on the finish, wound by granular tannins. Crack open with lamb chops or a herb- and salt-crusted steak.
