Palate Profile

From acclaimed winemaker David Hohnen, who co-founded Cape Mentelle in Margaret River in 1970 and founder Murray McHenry

"Halliday Wine Companion - Australian Winery of the Year 2022 & 2023"

A Malbec dominant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure and Petit Verdot adding lift, this wine bursts with aromas of dark cherries and crushed violets.

A Malbec dominant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure and Petit Verdot adding lift, this wine bursts with aromas of dark cherries and crushed violets. Sweetened spices and mulberries are complemented by more savoury notes of cedar and mocha. The palate is voluminous and soft with a ripe frame of fine tannins giving length to this deliciously fragrant wine.

Critic Awards

Blackcurrant, elderberry, praline aromas with roasted coffee notes. Generous and velvety smooth with ample inky black fruit, fine silky textures and superb oak complexity. Finishes claret-firm with a lovely chocolaty plume. Marvellous. Should develop brilliantly well.

Ripe cherry, plum, floral perfume and baking spices. It’s kind of juicy in the cherry and redcurrant department, but fresh and spicy too, with a nutty and meaty character, a little seaweed and dried rose, with firm stony tannin trailing on a pretty long finish. Brisk, a little chewy, but delightful, and quite different. Should age very well too.

It's highly complex, boasting violet, graphite and gravel aromas with touches of aged spice and beautifully integrated oak. Great upfront fruit impact lifts it up a notch or two with vibrant, sweet dark berry flavours well supported by quite firm tannins, the whole package poised with great composure. A velvety finish tops it off beautifully.

The malbec brings the purple fruit and the spice, the cabernet is responsible for the structure in the mouth, the supple tannins and the flash of pure cassis in the mouth. The petit verdot brings the violet, the depth and the darkness. All of it coming together in magnificent fashion in the glass. Very smart.

Almost opaque at the core, moving into a deep ruby-red at the rim. Mulberry, cedar wood and mint aromatics. Dark fruits fill the palate, then tangential lines of choc-mint and bresaola bring contrast and savoury complexity to the experience. It sits bold with equally drying tannins, making you take notice of its presence. Time will be your friend with this wine.
