Palate Profile

From acclaimed winemaker David Hohnen, who co-founded Cape Mentelle in Margaret River in 1970 and founder Murray McHenry

"Halliday Wine Companion - Australian Winery of the Year 2022 & 2023"

A purist’s Cabernet; unfined and unfiltered, this is an elegant expression of Hazel’s Vineyard with harmony, balance and integrity.

Fragrant aromas of red currants, violets and cedar are complemented by savoury black olive, tobacco and gravel dust undertones. The velvety palate has flash and refinement, revealing hints of cassis, cocoa and graphite well supported by a framework of firm but fine tannins providing length and definition to the palate.

Critic Awards

Again, the 2020 vintage falls into line in the glass here. The 2020 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay is more complete and more harmonious than either of the vintages on either side of it—certainly texturally, it is mellifluous and flowing. Through the finish, there are notes of almond skin, meal, plump orchard fruit and complex exotic spice. This is extremely appealing. Attractive. Seductive.

This is super-serious. Unbelievable value for money: scintillating citrus acid line, concentrated, mouth-staining fruit and complex layers of crushed nuts, creamy tannins ... all wrapped into a long and reverberating tail of flavour. Hand-picked fruit from 4 southern Margaret River vineyards: Hazel's, Calgardup, Burnside and Chapman. Wowsers.

Pale straw yellow, touch of lime at the rim. Subtle nose of lemon zest, white flowers, and a hint of seaspray. Whilst being tight and fresh with citrus fruit on the palate, there's an underlying power here. Notes of oyster brine and kaffir lime add character and tension. Acidity takes it long and finishes with a crisp snap.

Medium-light yellow colour; grilled nut and toasted bread aromas with a biscuit note, clean and appealing. Palate is fine and tense, deep and attractive, with a touch of richness, a trace of lemon and a dry, appetising finish.
