Palate Profile

SUPER HOT PRICE!!

"A luxurious but also elegant wine". Rated 95/100 Huon Hooke for The Real Review and 96/100 by Tyson Stelzer for Halliday's Wine Companion

St Hallett’s Higher Earth Syrah marks a new chapter for a brand known for its bold, unmistakably Barossan Shiraz. This wine, a true ‘Syrah’ style, is lighter on its toes—ethereal, even—with perfume that skips from the glass, and a juicy freshness that calls for drinking, with pleasure, right now. It seeks to represent with purity and grace the high altitude and cool climate of the Eden Valley, a showcase of this unique sub-region.

"The 2018 Higher Earth Shiraz is the inaugural release of this wine, made using purchased fruit from several parcels in the Eden Valley. For my money, it offers the best value of the St Hallett offerings I tasted." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Critic Awards

Average 25yo vines from across Eden Valley; matured in seasoned French oak barrels. St Hallett's deep reach into the great sites of the Eden Valley and its blending wizardry forge an exquisite take on this great vintage. At once concentrated and vibrant, spice-laden and enduring. Impeccably constructed tannins draw out a finish of pinpoint detail and lingering persistence.

Deep red/purple colour, and a rich black-fruit aroma, laced with star anise and licorice, the palate rich and fruit-sweet, sumptuously-flavoured and opulent, the tannins ample but very soft and supple. A luxurious but also elegant wine.

Boysenberry, red currants and blueberries appear on the nose, joined by hints of bay leaf and dried spices. It's medium to full-bodied, and despite being aged in French oak, it's edgier and more obviously tannic than the Blackwell Shiraz. Hold it another year or two, then drink it over the following decade or so.
