Palate Profile

Vega Sicilia's Pintia 2017 explores the terroirs of the Toro, a region with a rich and great winemaking tradition near the Douro River. The vineyard is divided into several plots that spread over 96 hectares. Situated at 700 meters of altitude, the vines rest on soils composed of clay, quartz and pebbles.

The nose is complex, blending notes of ripe macerated fruit and delicious spices. When aerated, the rich aromatic palette is followed by subtle notes of fine wood from the ageing process. This wine seduces the palate with its power, its tannic structure and its balance.

Critic Awards

This dark-garnet-colored wine has aromas of black cherry, black currant, sage and black-olive paste. It is smooth on impact, with flavors of blackberry, cassis, coffee bean, dark chocolate and clove. Forceful tannins slowly peel away to reveal a lingering pomegranate and chocolate finish.

Lots of spices and bright fruit for such a ripe, hot vintage. Some orange-peel undertones. Full-bodied and layered with beautiful fruit and length. Really nicely done. Another two or three years will soften it.

It feels quite fresh and harmonious, not showing any heat, not as fresh and atypical as 2016. It keeps the poise and the balance and has abundant but fine tannins. These wines repay time in bottle, and even if approachable now, it should get better with time. It's like a refined version of the 2015. A triumph over the adverse conditions of the year.

A balanced red, with steeped raspberry and wild strawberry fruit flavors framed by fine, lightly chalky tannins. Offers accents of licorice, smoke, spice box and citrus peel that lace the fruit flavors, with lively acidity carrying through to the lightly chewy finish.
