Murray Henry was born into a family of hoteliers, owning and developing several businesses relating to the food and beverage industry. His experience in the wine business has an impressive pedigree - his brother-in-law David Hohnen started Cape Mentelle. In the 80s they went over to New Zealand and started Cloudy Bay.
The wine in both vineyards was of such high quality that the Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton group came in as shareholders. In the years that followed, he bought several parcels of land in the Margaret River region. Murray started his winery McHenry Hohnen in 2004, and he secured his position as the premier winemaker in that region, producing single varietal wines from Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
For decades Murray McHenry has been a leading proponent in pushing the viticultural boundaries of this pristine region. While the portfolio is grounded in Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties, they are also well regarded for less traditional varieties for this region such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache, Mataro and Zinfandel.
The McHenry Hohnen Winery is a two-time Halliday Wine Companion Finalist “Winery of the Year”, featuring on both the 2022 & 2023 Shortlist. In 2022 Murray McHenry was also awarded with the prestigious Order of Australia Medal in recognition to his contribution to sport and hospitality over the last 50 years.
