Profile
The Clos Henri Single Vineyard Waimaunga (Windblown Clays) Pinot Noir 2021 offers a compelling and expressive take on Marlborough Pinot Noir, distilled through ancient glacial clays and organic viticulture.
Clos Henri’s Waimaunga site rests on wind‑blown clay soils shaped during the ancient Waimaunga glaciation. The vines, dry‑farmed and organically managed, produce grapes to express this terroir with purity and subtle complexity. Fermentation sees about 20 % whole‑cluster inclusion, cold soaking, and light extraction before ageing for 12 months in French oak (20 % new), supporting a textural yet restrained style
On the nose, expect layers of ripe blueberry, violet florals, and warm baking spices, with hints of dried herbs, peppercorn, even a subtle undercurrent of tobacco or milky coffee aroma. The palate is medium‑bodied and smooth, driven by dark berry fruit and a firm but fine-grained tannin structure. There’s a savory thread weaving through the red‑fruit core, giving freshness and lift. The wine finishes long, with fine length and spice impressions.
Critics have given the 2021 a bright reception: Wine Enthusiast scored it 95/100, calling it primary and delicious now yet built to age through 2031. They highlighted the “supple dark berry fruit” framed by savory fine-grained tannins and a satiny palate. Cameron Douglas MW awarded it 96 points, praising its “complex, dry, layered, textured bouquet,” fine spices, smoke‑tinged soil layers, and “fabulous tannins and length”. Additional community reviews average around 92.5 points, underscoring consistency across drinkers.
This Pinot Noir is ideal for pairing with dishes like rack of lamb, mushroom risotto, or wild game, and will reward decanting. While already approachable, it has the structure and balance to evolve over the next 7–10 years. It’s a stylish and refined example of Marlborough Pinot with both power and poise.
