Profile

A refined Barolo from a prime single-vineyard site in the Ginestra Cru. The Del Gris, returning to our lineup, hails from a steep, south-southeast-facing plot with sandy and silty clay soils.

Fermented in steel and aged with subtle oak integration, this elegant, boutique offering from Conterno Fantino is a sought-after Barolo, perfect for decanting now or cellaring for future enjoyment.

Azienda Agricola Conterno Fantino was established in 1982 by Guido Fantino and Claudio Conterno. The state-of-the art winery is located on top of a hill overlooking the old village of Montforte d'Alba, enjoying an extraordinary view stretching out around the arc of Alps.

Drink now to 2031.

Critic awards

The 2018 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is elegant and woven tightly together with small berry fruits, redcurrant, wild lilac and violet, crushed stone and licorice root. With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the wine is streamlined and silky, but you also sense the power and tightness of the inner fiber that locks it all together with seamless precision.

Bright ruby red with a gently brightening rim. Very spicy on the nose, with hints of herbs, pepper, and anise, then leather and wet stone, then dried rose petals. Very varied. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with very tight tannins, showing plenty of punch, but lacking some depth overall.

— 93 points, Falstaff

Monforte d'Alba. Lustrous ruby. Taut and compact on the nose and slow to reveal itself, except for the minerally savoury hints. Supple, juicy, mouth-filling and complex fruit with a deep layer of slightly drying tannins. Very long aromatic and focused finish but far from ready.
