Profile

Badia a Coltibuono is steeped in history, dating back to 1051, when a community of Vallombrosan monks resided in an abbey built on the property, known as ‘Badia’. ‘Cultibuono’ comes from the Latin of the era meaning ‘good harvest’ and the land has always been cultivated the respectfully. Since the 2003 vintage, the estate has been certified organic.

Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018 shows elegant balsamic notes prelude layers of cherry, floral notes, liquorice and chocolate. Warm on the palate but with great harmony between the full texture and a lifted finish.

Critic awards

A transparent but deep crimson color, the 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva displays a ripe profile in its aromas of baked red plum, sweet baking spices, a hint of vanilla, and dried flowers. Full-bodied, it expands on the palate with ripe tannins and rounded fruit, although it’s not heavy and has more modest acidity. SHowing more tertiary notes of mushroom-covered earth and a relatively long finish, I would prefer to enjoy this ripe Riserva over the next few years.

— 93 points, Jeb Dunnuck

A lovely, elegant wine with more fruitiness than most Chianti Classico Riservas, yet it doesn’t lack for structure. It has flavors of cherries, violets, barrel oak, rustic citrus notes that come with Sangiovese and even some black raspberries in the aftertaste. Overall, lovely depth and complexity of flavors, and certainly a bargain for the price.

Red cherries, cranberries, slate, cloves, bay leaves and lemon peel on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and excellent freshness. Bright.

— 92 points, James Suckling

Subtle, revealing rose, strawberry, cherry and white pepper aromas and flavors. Tightly wound, with solid grip, this feels youthful and is evolving at a glacier pace. Reveals fine balance and length, with a chalky, mineral finish.
