Profile

With each vintage release the cool-climate Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz provides an interesting counterpoint to the more opulent and richly concentrated warm climate Bin 28 Shiraz. Bin 128 comprises fruit sourced from the unique terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red table wines.

Coonawarra has remained the source of shiraz fruit for Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads, élevage that was refined during the 1980’s when the transition was made from American to French oak

Critic awards

Deep, bright purple/red colour, with a very ripe, fragrant, blueberry and cherry-like aroma, essency and delicious. The wine is soft and rich, gently chocolaty and plush, with a sumptuous rich, fruit-sweet middle-palate surrounded by soft, fluffy tannins, the whole entity moving smoothly through to a very long-lasting finish. A totally exotic, hedonistic shiraz.

Matured for 12 months in French hogsheads (26% new) resulted in a wine with a vivid yet deep crimson-purple hue that duly delivered on the promise of its colour. A light year away from the style of the '80s, American oak providing more flavour than the fruit. Now there's a velvety-smooth abundance of plum, blackberry compote and spice couched in soft, but persistent, tannins.
James Halliday

This is a rich Shiraz from Coonawarra's terra rossa soils. Heady notes of plums, currants, baking spice, mint and licorice have an earthy, savory underbelly as well as a polish of toasty oak. Tannins are powerful but finely structured, pinning the fruit into place. A big, steak-friendly wine from a solid vintage with high gloss appeal. Drink now–2030.
