Profile

Penfolds 311 Chardonnay 2017 is a celebrated expression from one of Australia's most renowned wineries, Penfolds. Sourced from the cool-climate regions of Adelaide Hills, this vintage captures the elegance and complexity that the region’s terroir imparts. The 2017 season in Adelaide Hills was marked by a long, cool ripening period, which allowed the grapes to develop vibrant acidity and intense flavors, resulting in a Chardonnay that stands out for its purity and precision.

In the glass, the Penfolds 311 2017 Chardonnay reveals a pale straw color with a hint of green at the edges. The nose is immediately engaging, offering a bouquet of white peach, citrus blossom, and subtle notes of flinty minerality. As it opens up, nuances of nectarine, cashew, and a touch of spicy oak emerge, adding complexity to the aromatic profile.

On the palate, this Chardonnay is lively and crisp, with a refreshing acidity that is beautifully balanced by a creamy texture. Flavors of grapefruit, lemon curd, and green apple dominate, with underlying hints of almond and a slight smokiness from the oak aging. The finish is long and clean, with a persistent minerality that leaves a lasting impression.

Critic awards

Chardonnay made with grapes sourced from the Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Tumbarumba regions. Clean, pure, highly varietal nose. White peach and nectarine, a flintiness rising. The palate introduces toast, malt, wheaty elements and a little funk, though it’s well contained. There are many elements here and yet they present in unison. Dry, serious finish. Bristling length. Excellent wine. Will mature beautifully.

Pale colour. Intensely fresh white apricot, “fino” aromas with roasted nut, gun flint nuances. Well concentrated white apricot, peach, bitter lemon yeasty, cashew nut flavours, fine looseknit chalky al-dente textures, classic mid-palate suppleness and long crisp acidity. Minerally wine with attractive generosity of fruit and freshness. An early drinking style for aficionados with lovely varietal definition and tension.

Aromas of nectarines, papaya, guava, white and yellow peaches and a whiff of lemon, all surrounded by smoothly delivered wood and winemaker influence. The palate is taut and crunchy with pithy grapefruit and cucumber crunch, then a wave of richer honeysuckle and light biscuity notes. Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Tumbarumba fruit sourcing.

— 92 points, James Suckling

Light yellow colour, toasted nut bouquet with almond and cashew hints. The palate soft and easygoing, gentle and rounded, the acidity is fresh and balanced and not shrill. The finish is clean and dry and balanced, smooth and refreshing. Oak is balanced and subtle. Straightforward and very pleasant.
