Profile

Camartina 2017 has a beautiful floral fabric entwined with scents of wild herbs, plump blackberries and cedar spice, promising elegance and poise even in this warmer vintage.

Expressive and generous on the full-bodied palate, it reveals an abundance of ripe black cherries and plums, blackcurrants, cassis, and a mild earthiness with a touch of black pepper. The fine structure of this wine lies in the seamless integration of sophisticated and sturdy tannins along with a bright acidity weaving it all together.

Founded in 1974, Querciabella, or 'beautiful oak', is notable for the choices made by owner Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni. Located in the very heart of the Chianti area on the Southern side of Firenze, the estate was a pioneer in sustainable viticulture, converting to organics in 1988 and biodynamics in 2000. Since 2010, in keeping with the owner's vegan principles, they have practiced what they term 'cruelty-free biodynamics' – only using non-animal-derived products at every stage of the process. Today, they are one of the largest biodynamic and organic estates in Italy.

Critic awards

The 2017 Camartina does not have the opulence readers are likely to expect in this warm, dry year. Time in the glass brings out brighter tonalities of fruit and floral overtones that give a good idea to where the 2017 is heading.

— 95 points, Antonio Galloni - Vinous

This is very dense and structured, but it has very energetic and intense tannins that provide energy and focus. It’s medium-to full-bodied with so much currant, slate, dried-mushroom and bark character. Flavorful finish.

— 95 points, James Suckling

Sparkling, intense ruby garnet. Opens on the nose with notes of dried mushrooms and dried tomatoes, ripe cherry fruit. Grippy, hearty tannin in the approach and progression, determines the wine on the palate, well-developed fruit, unfortunately quite brittle in the finish.

— 93 points, Falstaff
