Profile

Finisterre: [Ends of the Earth] – focussing on single-variety, single-region wines with an emphasis on selected special sites that display our preferred characteristics. Hand-harvesting, fruit sorting and intuitive winemaking delivers small-parcel wines with clarity, purity, great texture and flavour expression.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Oozing out of the glass are black cherry, liquorice and blackberry aromas which are trailed by notions of vanillin cedar, light scorched earth and blackpepper. Rich and satiny in its feel the full bodied palate is laden with liquorice, black cherry and blackberry fruits.

Critic awards

The Finisterre range has a single variety/single region/special site mantra that is immediately recognisable here in a black berry meets charry earth meets high percentage dark chocolate matrix which is so identifiable in the Vales. All these notes resonate through the nose and on to the palate with neatly balanced and integrated flavours subtly backed in by well-timed maturation in a range of new, one and two year old French oak barriques that essentially offer structural integrity more than weight or power. Fulfills its regional/varietal identity as a rich and complex expression of Shiraz while remaining sensitively layered and undyingly delicious.

Hand picked, zero adds and best, 2–3 weeks' post-ferment maceration, serving to attenuate and polymerise the tannins. And fine they are: lithe, savoury, detailed and firmer than what I recall here. Riffs on lilac, dried nori, pepper grind, salumi and dark cherry. A waft of clove and anise, marks the finish. The oak, optimal. Yet the righteous tannins make this wine.

Deep, dense red/purple colour, bright and youthful. There are herbal and peppery aromas, the latter more green peppercorn than black. The palate is intense and elegantly proportioned, with a hint of rawness and slightly sticky tannins. A bright, fresh, modern Oz shiraz with plenty of potential.
