Palate Profile

Bin 138 draws its inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône, where shiraz, grenache and mataro (mourvèdre) are blended in varying proportions to create full-bodied wines possessing rich and heady perfume. Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from old Barossa Valley vines (some more than 100 years old) and then matured for 12 to 15 months in seasoned oak hogsheads to allow the different varietals to shine through.

Critic Awards

Very deep, rich red-purple hue; very savoury earth and dried-herb bouquet, less reminiscent of grenache than the other varieties, the palate full-bodied and rich, fleshy and supple, the fruit-sweetness moderate and suffused with savoury tannins in lovely harmony. This is a cracker and right up to its reputation. Very enjoyable already.

This has a complex nose, with raspberries and blackberries, as well as savory, tarry elements. Fruit-focused. The palate has a dark-berry fruit core with nicely balanced and approachable style. A regional expression of Barossa.

Meduim-deep crimson. Very attractive musky plum, blackberry, blueberry aromas with hints of roasted walnut. Supple sweet-fruited palate with ample red and dark plums, cranberry, mulberry, red cherry fruits, some savoury/roasted walnut complexity, fine loose-knit chalky textures, very good mid-palate viscosity and fresh integrated and persistent crisp acidity. Lovely fruit-driven finish with aniseed notes. Not for the long haul but a delicious gluggable drink. Andrew Caillard MW

The 2020 Bin 138 Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro is aromatically spicy and exciting, with peppered raspberry, star anise, strawberry and humbug through the finish. It's a really lovely, supple, delicious wine. There is polish and shape here. Early-ish drinking recommended to capture the vivacity and life of the fruit.

A blend of 65% shiraz, 29% grenache and 6% mataro that comes together in a fairly solid Barossa style, exotic fruits and smoked meaty savouries entwined. There’s an inherent earthiness as well, that anchors a heady bouquet, while a core of sweet Barossa fruit shines mid-palate before a coating of assertive tannins makes its presence felt. Quite a robust expression of this blend.
