Profile

Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz is a sub-regional expression that is unmistakably Penfolds in character. Conceived from the ancient soils of Marananga, which lie very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor – slightly to the North West, where warm dry conditions and rich red soil provide the backbone to some of the region’s best-known wine.

Deep, dark red in colour, with a nose of lifted spices - cumin, dried fennel, and subtle notes of blueberry and juniper. The palate is highly fruit driven, complimented by a smidgeon of cola flavours.

Critic awards

Deep colour. Lovely dark chocolate, blackberry, mulberry aromas with light cinnamon, vanilla, roasted chestnut notes. Generous, saturated and inky with lovely deep-set blackberry, mulberry fruits, cinnamon ginger oak complexity, fine loose knit ripe lacy textures, some meaty notes and integrated long acidity. Finishes grainy firm with plenty of blackberry ginger liquorice notes. A classical Barossa Shiraz with superb density, fruit definition and balanced oak. A reference vintage. Superb unforced wine showing all the hallmarks of the Penfolds house style and regional definition. My top pick of the 2019 collection.

Very deep, dense, brooding red/purple colour, with a smoky char-oak and black fruit bouquet incorporating blackstrap licorice and sooty/earthy and blackberry notes. Cocoa powder and coal dust. The wine is very full-bodied but not as big a Bin 150 as usual. A more elegant style except that the tannins are quite chewy and robust, and the length is quite persistent.

Matured for 12 months in American (28% new) and French (25% new) oak. Deeply coloured; 'full-bodied' barely suffices to describe this awesome wine and its commensurately complex palate. Robert Parker would have loved it, and you can't deny its class -it's a matter of preference.
