Profile

The wine is named after `The Fatal Shore` a historical novel, published in 1986, by Australian author and art critic Robert Hughes. It delves into the dark history of Tasmania’s colonisation through the transportation of convicts to this remote and wild island. The wine itself is brooding in nature with impressive depth and fruit purity. Red cherry, rose petal, bracken and blueberries lead to a very energetic palate with tannins that wrap and expand out the finish. It is long and vibrant with a fine backbone of acidity.

Critic awards

Fruit from the Coal River Valley in Tassie, but made in the Yarra via the gentle way that defines Giant Steps. Yet the density and power of the place, the fruit intensity, comes through strongly. Dark cherries abound, but so too savoury, umami flavours of soy sauce and dried porcini with meaty reduction and spicy oak adding another layer. Full bodied with shapely tannins and a persuasive finish. A neat counterpoint to the Yarra Valley single-vineyard wines.

A notably deeper colour than the Giant Steps Yarra pinots, looking more Central Otago than Yarra! The bouquet shows dark fruits rather than red, rich and ripe, with more stemmy whole-bunch overtones than the 2020 Yarra pinots, although they all have about 50% whole-bunch ferments. The wine is medium-bodied and has more weight and tannin than the Yarra wines, finishing with a conclusive grip which is in balance and simply calls for heartier food. It has less perfume and detail but more brawn.

This Coal River Valley pinot has a modern, gently reductive edge to the nose with plenty of brambly, spicy and sappy complexity to the ripe red and dark cherries. The palate is delivered in such pure and plump style and really fresh cherries abound. Very drinkable. Drink over the next five years.

Taut and tense, dry and edgy. Sour cherry, tart cranberry drink characters, a bit of game meat, clove, meat drippings, paprika too with graphite notes in the mix. The tannin of paprika powder here too. Brooding but also kind of light too. Grippy and with this pleasing sour-bitter note through it all. Strict pinot, done well.
