Profile

From acclaimed winemaker David Hohnen, who co-founded Cape Mentelle in Margaret River in 1970 and founder Murray McHenry.

"Halliday Wine Companion - Australian Winery of the Year 2022 & 2023"

A nod to Jura here perhaps, with saline notes, nuts, faint fino sherry characters and green apple. To go with it, there’s good length and depth of flavour, and although there’s intensity, there’s balance. Throughout, you can sense a clear focus on chardonnay staying the hero, with a goal to maximise the intensity of flavour and support it with freshness and interest. A brilliant wine.

Critic Awards

Again, the 2020 vintage falls into line in the glass here. The 2020 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay is more complete and more harmonious than either of the vintages on either side of it—certainly texturally, it is mellifluous and flowing. Through the finish, there are notes of almond skin, meal, plump orchard fruit and complex exotic spice. This is extremely appealing. Attractive. Seductive.

I've tasted this wine blind in pretty esteemed company, the likes of Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Genevrières etc, and while it has come just under those wines in ranking, it has more than stood its ground, and has earned my unwavering respect in doing so.Powerful, layered, fragrant, balanced, rippling and exciting. Back up the car – this is too cheap currently. (Elen Larkin)

White peach, grapefruit, oatmeal, nougat and spice, with an flowering basil perfume. It’s tight, but has a gentle creamy gloss, ginger and ripe grapefruit, a flinty texture and firm grip, ripe lime with a little oyster shell, and a long finish offering zip and intensity. Superb.

Pale straw yellow, touch of lime at the rim. Subtle nose of lemon zest, white flowers, and a hint of seaspray. Whilst being tight and fresh with citrus fruit on the palate, there's an underlying power here. Notes of oyster brine and kaffir lime add character and tension. Acidity takes it long and finishes with a crisp snap.

Peach stones, baked apples, cloves, sourdough and salted butter. Distinct salinity here adds intrigue to the buttery, compact and powerful palate. Full-bodied. Dense yet vibrant.
