Palate Profile

Margaret Lehmann is the great woman beside the great man: wife, business partner, and champion of Peter Lehmann Wines and the Barossa Valley. Peter Lehmann winemakers rewrote the rulebooks of Barossa Semillon in the early 90s, eschewing oak and opting for an early-picked style that lent itself to ageing. The result is Margaret Semillon. Released after five years cellaring, it has youthful lemongrass aromas and citrus acidity that belie its age; and complexity you would expect from an aged white with a bountiful trophy cabinet.

2012 Margaret Semillon has developed an attractive pale straw colour with a green hue, displaying hints of lemon curd, zest and green melon. The finish is crisp with a mouth-watering acidity derived from the cool conditions of this vintage.

“Medium to full, bright yellow colour, with a green herb, lemon juice, basil leaf and crushed stalk aroma, together with bottle-developed characters. Lemon pith and green herbs rather than toast. The wine is fresh and remarkably under-developed, with delicacy and cleansing but seamless acidity. A fine wine, ageing gracefully, and seems set for a very long career.”

Critic Awards

An impossibly pale straw-green. Shot with cut grass, fresh lemon, Granny Smith apple skin. Building preserved lemon, buttered toast and subtle nutmeg. Crystalline acidity electrifies an exceedingly long finish. The Hunter is king of dry semillon and Margaret is its only true rival.
